Labyrinth 2 for iPhone/iPod Touch

Labyrinth was a showpiece game for tilt controls on iPhone and the sequel is improved in every way. A more pleasing 3D style. A huge selection of new levels that range in difficulty. A multitude of brand new in-stage components like canons and bumpers. A fantastic local four-player mode. And an a great level editor that has already facilitated hundreds of user-created stages, plenty of them superb. I wish the editor were available within the game and not solely on an external website and the omission of original music is unfortunate. But even so, this is a great game and one ideally suited to Apple’s handheld.

Flight Control for iPhone

Flight Control is a simple, but great iPhone app for short-term gaming sessions. If you’ve already got a few of these “potato chip” titles, where you’ll get a quick taste of gameplay, and then come back over and over again for more, you may not need another, but Firemint’s offering is cheap, simple, and instantly accessible. One control, one stage, a high score, and mysteriously addictinggameplay. I’d love to see more in updates, including a few other levels, maybe a challenge mode, and more importantly, online leaderboards, but this is a fun, quick fix game that has me coming back for more. If it’s #1 spot on the apps store is any indication, it has a lot of others doing exactly the same.

Plants vs Zombies v1.0 for iPhone

Plants vs. Zombies for the iPhone plays just like it’s larger cousin. Zombies of all types pour in from the right side of the screen. Using collected bits of sun as currency, you must buy and place various plants around the yard to stave off the groaning hordes. Pea shooters are your first mode of attack, but soon you get wheelbarrows full of interesting things to use in offensive, defensive, and strategic ways. The zombies get more creative, too, with a few wearing protective gear or doing really wacky things (like driving zamboni machines) to get past your defenses. And then there are night time levels, tracts of water to deal with, fog, and stages that take place on the roof!
